A Kurdish Peshmerga commander has stated that the chemical weapons recently used by the ISIS against Peshmerga, might have been seized from the Saddam Hussein’s Ba’ath regime.
Hamid Afandi, Commander of Peshmerga forces on the Bashiq frontline said that he suspects that IS has obtained the chemical weapons and substances from the old caches of Ba’ath regime, and they are being used now against Peshmerga forces.
Afandi explained that the Ba’ath regime attacked the Kurdish town of Halabja in 1988 via chemical airstrikes as well as chemical mortars; “and IS is now using the second method against Kurds again.”
He believes that those fugitive Ba’ath leaders who have joined IS “may have revealed Saddam Hussein’s cache of chemical weapons to the terrorist group.”
IS has recently used chemical weapons against Peshmerga forces in Northern Iraq and other civilian communities in southern Kirkuk.
International organisations have confirmed that mustard gas and other chemical substances have been widely used by IS in both Iraq and Syria.
